The City Development Plan (CDP) for Amritsar has incorporated relevant aspects concerning religious, social, cultural and environmental heritage of the city under JNNURM. Dolly Michandani reports.
Overview: Amritsar is home to the 'Harmandir Sahib', also known as the Golden Temple, the spiritual and cultural centre of the Sikh religion. The name Amritsar is derived from the word Amrit-Sagar, "The Ocean of the Nectar of Immortality". The city is known for its historical and religious significance. The main commercial activities include tourism, carpets and fabrics, farm produce, handicrafts, service trades and light engineering. The city is popular for its food and culture.
